I would strongly encourage you to visit this great site: I signed up online over 5 years ago now and they have saved me thousands on all services...From root canals, xrays, exams, cleanings..etc. All services are included in this very affordable plan. Even Cosmetic surgery, orthodontist and dentures. They even had my very affordable plan active in 2 hours and was able to use it the very same day. hope this helps.

A discount dental plan like Ameriplan is definitely worth looking into. The discounts are anywhere from 25%-80% so you don't pay the full price. There are no waiting periods and no maximum caps as to how much you can have done within a year period.

A dental plan is not insurance, but many people are lead to believe that it is. A plan is really nothing more than a coupon that you pay for every month. they are not a third party payer, so it is a fee for service plan which mean you have to pay for all of it. this is why the pitch from dental plans sound. they pitch no co pay, no limitation, no restrictions etc etc etc, this is beause they never pay out. so if you want ten sets of x rays you can get ten sets ince you would be paying for it.

Insurance means there is a third party payer.

You should consider having a conslt and pay out of pocket if possible because if your not getting the ins from an employer it means yor paying for it and you may ended paying more befor you know than if you paid out of pocket. You see insurance place restrictions like wait periods or they down grad treatment.

dental insurance is good if your employer is paying for i, but if you have to pay for it its not worth it bc wih all the restriction you really are not saving anything. Dental plans in my opion are legal scams , they sound good compared to insurance but they never pa out anything, and you have to pay for all the treatment thats why there is no restriction.

A coming problem with people that have a plan is they will go into the office find out they ned so an so, then they ask well what does my plan cover?

the answer is nothing.

Then why do I have this plan for?

good question, but your plan is a fee for service plan you pay for very month, basically your buying a coupon.

at this point most patients get upset at finding out they really dont have any coverage.

My opion i just pay out of pocket if your not gettng insurance from an employer.

If you already know you'll be needing work, go for the dental insurance which provides more coverage. I think a plan simply is a discount service, correct?

It depends though, because insurance plans have a preexisting condition exclusion of usually a year. I don't know if the same applies to the plan.

Take the two and lay them side-by-side. If you have a close relationship with your dental office, the office manager should be nice enough to help you out.
