When do babies start to smile on purpose?

Ana asked:

My daughter is four weeks old and she smiled and giggled while looking at her dad today. Was it real or still mirror reflex? I can’t wait for her to actually smile on purpose and not just in her sleep. When will I hear a real laugh from her?

  1. A baby can purposely smile from about 6-9 weeks.
Its a little early for her to be smiling, but its possible…

  2. Text books say that babies begin to smile at 6 weeks, but i believe that some babies definatly mean to smile earlier than that! When it is a real smile, you will know! A laugh comes a little bit later, i think my son was about 9 weeks when he laughed.

my son smiled at 6 weeks and laughed at about a week shy from being 3 months… it is the most precious thing you will see or hear!! i absolutely love to make him laugh… he is now 4 months and we don’t even have to tickle him to make hi laugh anymore… we just look at him and he thinks it is just sooo funny

i am sure that was a real smile at her daddy…. you can really tell if they have happy eyes…. instead of a relieved look on their little faces…

    congrats on the lil one!!!

my baby was smiling and cooing at the dr.during his 3 week check up and she commented on on how great it was he was smilling already. so its possible it was real.

  5. She could be smiling for real. My son smiled in response to me for the first time at 5 weeks. I think around 6 weeks is average, but 4 weeks wouldn’t be unheard of. I’m not sure when you will hear a real laugh…my son giggles, but I’m still waiting for that beautiful baby belly laugh. He is 14 weeks and hasn’t given me one yet…I’m still waiting!
