Can you start with traditional braces and go to invisalign when your teeth are straighter?

I ****** my thumb as a child, had braces for 3 years. And due to my parents being irresponsible I never quite finished my treatment with my retainer. My teeth over the years have shifted back to were they were, I really do not want metal braces again.
